Doing Websites The Wrong Way

You have designed your website wrong, so has many people done before, so have myself... you mostly. It's widely common to do something as such, creating something bad and publishing it, I dont't obviously. What needs to be discussed, is the way to avoid these oversights. I was very templed to put another period after oversights, just to make my point again.

If you haven't left just yet, which you have, below I've constructed a list of common annoyances.

Music in Website
Now many school including mine use laptops in schools, also in a curriculum. Whenever I’m researching the interweb and come across a website that uses music on entry, I don’t want everyone in class turned towards me hearing some horrid music someone seems to like. I know what the simple solution is, turn off the sound, but I’am not going to this site to hear it. Did they really think elevator music adds a nice atmosphere to there website? No matter what, It does not. Let's say, this is a band page I come across, the website designer thinks “This could really make the visiter know that this our new song, so I guess I could make them hear it when they visit.” long thought, but again, another moron. I came across this band page, without the intent to listen to their new music, you can guess what happened. Even if I was, I would find it on a player on their website, not in my face. So please, keep music a findable option, not a forced option.

Splash Pages
If you don’t know what a splashpage is, here is what it is, "an unnecessary page in a website that makes people click out of it". Basically the only good use for one is a language select, age select, or even a bandwidth select. They are good for knowing some type of preference that the visitor has, which is useful. Still in 2012 I have visited websites that literally say “Hello” then an enter button or a logo that they think everyone knows to click on it.

Misspelling
I wanted to give you an example but my spell-checker yelled at me. For my Wix users, Wix does not offer that feature yet, so either write it in Pages or another text editor. I just find it annoying, unprofessional, and bad for SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Pixels
Yes, I know there in your website, but I just don’t want to see them. I don't want to be at a website and their photos are as pixelated as a pedestrians face on a TV show. Try finding a better resolution image or make the image smaller, but not too small where it's as big a as a pixel. <Insert lame joke here: You get the picture.>

Unorganized
This seems like a no-brainer, but I still see website that don’t line up there blocks (chunks of content) or even worse, don’t have a layout. They just seem to try and find where they can just pop something there. As a visitor to the site, I want to feel as the website cares about me and my visit, not just putting some information on a site. A website tells a great deal of the company and if the website doesn’t care, does the company?

Protrusive  Advertising
This is one of the worsts, now I will understand website like IGN using the “Continue to website” pages, ‘cause that is how they make all of their money. For another website, it doesn't work and makes it very annoying, more annoying then splash pages. In text ads, pop-up ads, full page ads, and morons who have people step out from the side of the screen talking to you from their website that everyone clicks out immediately. If you want advertisements in your website, make them discrete. Make them clicked on if a visitor wants to click on them. The best way of placing ads is to be discrete, not obtrusive.

Out dated colors
Colors go out of date, let's take a look at those now A A A A A, I don’t want to be seeing those colors on your site, they are just awful colors in web pages now. If you can look back at a website from along time ago and say “Hey, I use that same color”. You’ve got an outdated color, Its like having a green colored stove in your 2012 contracted home, those two things just do not work together.

Inconstancy in Work
When I am reading a website and see something out of the usual, like when they use the word I’ll for ten times, but one time the use it like this i’ll. If you keep constant in your writing or even design of the site, it will look more professional and cleaner. I will admit, I will do this everyone and awhile, but I’ll word on this and i’ll keep working on it until I got it.

Too Glossy
What I mean about "too glossy" is placing gradients, shine, shadows, all of that stuff everywhere on your website. It looks like you are trying to make up for something, possibly your lack of talent, but your gone so it's fine. The best thing to do, create a good layout (I will do a post about this sometime in the past), then apply that to your website where needed.

"Is it dead?"
Do you really want to visit a site that says “Check out the brand new Apple II”. I would just leave, so make sure that your content is alive and with the times or you might just be indexed as a time-capsule. Which is not good for SEO and for the visits, I mean the things that are now just collecting dust on your shelf.

Best Place on The Internet
I am surprised that people still do this. I have visited basically five different sites that have the same content, but each one says there the best. Does it really help your site to say that it is the best place for all the news? Especially since many places say that now, it is meaningless. Now, if you won every award possible, you have the right to say that, but you don't. Say, something about your use or why you’re better then the rest. Include in your content something extra and your visitor will come to you more then everyone else.

Funeral Attitude
I’ll ask you a question, is it more fun to go to a comedy show or a funeral? I will just assume you chose comedy show. On a site that is boring and just tells you some facts, isn’t fun nor exciting. Invoking some humor to something makes the site better, it just does. Be comical not tactless, there is a big difference and you don’t want to cross it or sound like you’re trying. For some people it's easier to be comical, but even if your not, trying will lead to some uncoveries (make it learn that word or add to dictionary). You may even find out you have a good sense of humor. Humor adds something to a website, that just content doesn’t.

Saying there is more coming soon, in an unfinished post
I’ll continue to add to this as I think of it, much better right?

This list was from my old blog and not completely new, it still is relevant though.
