Cloud Storage Idea

I have been brainstorming, mocking-up designs, etc for a cloud storage service. Everything is not set in stone and probably going to change. Let me know what you think and if you can help with developing, please message!

Okay, Bad Idea.

Okay, that was not a good idea. I though switching the name and domain to UXFort was going to be a nice change, but it was a fatal decision. 'Many' (I say that lightly) websites are connected to the devprotocol.blogspot.com domain in links and since I changed that, visits went from 40-50 a day to 0 a day. I changed it back and rethought the scheme.

DevProtocol is not just me anymore. I want to open it up for anyone who is interested in writing about design, development, or in general technology. Though the main focus is on design (also sharing designs) and development. If you are interested in writing or publishing an article you have already finished please send me (Ryan) an email or message and I can add you to the authors.

Let’s Play: Sketch - The Masking Objects Adventure

Beginner difficulty

Image Achievement:

Having an image in the canvas so you can manipulate it.

How:

In the OS X menu bar, click “Insert”, then “Image…”. That will bring the Finder window up so you can choose the image you want to upload; or drag the image file (it can be from Finder, Pixelmator, Photoshop, etc) and drop it in the canvas.

I find that right-clicking a file then copying it to you clipboard then pasting it into the canvas does not work. I recommend trying it for yourself.

Rectangle Achievement:

Place a rectangle in the canvas so you can manipulate it, like the evil person you are.

How:

Click the shapes icon to the far left in the Sketch menu bar. On the list, click “Rectangle”. Now click and drag your mouse to create a square in the canvas. If you want a perfect square, you can press the “Shift” key while dragging your mouse.

In the Inspector you can use numbers to adjust the size instead of using the mouse if you want.

Masking Achievement:

Making the image masked by the rectangle.

How:

  1. Align the image over the rectangle. If the rectangle is over the image, click the down arrow in the Sketch menu bar when the rectangle is selected.
  2. Select the image and rectangle.
  3. Click “Edit” in the OS X menu bar then click “Mask with Selected Shape”. This will mask only the objects you have selected.

Bonus Achievement:
Rounding the corners of the mask.

How:

  1. In the Layer List, click the folder’s arrow to show the enclosing layers, then click the “Mask” layer.
  2. In the Inspector, drag the Radius slider so the corners are slightly curved.

Three achievements unlocked, plus a bonus one (if you did it)!

Canvas - Main visual working area in Sketch 2.

Layer List - Left area with the hierarchy of objects.

Inspector - Right area with object preferences.

OS X menu bar - The very top bar which has the Apple logo and the time.

Please tell me of any "Let's Plays" you want me to make... and mistakes I made!

BlackBerry Logo Rebrand

I may or may not be; but I am, unofficially working on a rebrand for BlackBerry. They have a very unique character, but I want it a bit stronger.

A key part of the rebrand is the logo. The new logo is suppose to be recognizable to the BlackBerry brand and add new creative direction.

Would appreciate feedback!

iOS 7 Lock Screen Concept

What I really want to see, is a unlock screen that you can fold away to uncover your homescreen. Like in Maps with the flap you can pull, but for a lockscreen.

Like the rest of my work, if you want the .sketch file, just contact me.

What I think Google.com Should Look Like (Part 1)

Still work-in-progress. Please comment on any mistakes, I know people really like to do that. This is also just a preview as you can obviously see the rest of the page is hidden.

In the preview, this is how it would look right after a person said their command. The person also asked the time in Austria, so that card is still shown. Like current Google Now, swipe off the screen to hide card also the menu button will have an option to hide.

Font used: Roboto [link]

More to come.

I have almost reached 4,000 "didn't mean to click that" views. Still havent reached a comment yet though.

Android 5.0 Lock Screen Rethink Update

Image

This would be an update to the previous rethink of the Android lock screen. Slide the blue ring to the icon you want to go to, just like 4.2 but possibly better looking, but thats subjective. The half-circle with the icons only shows when you have your finger on the blue circle.

Android 5 Lock Screen Rethink

How it works:
On the side the half-circle is placed, there is a three dot slider. The three dot slider can unlock the screen buy sliding down or up. Instead of a straight line unlock like on most phones, you have a curve that your thumb was made for. With straight unlock sliders you have to articulate your fingers most of the time or move the phone to reach, especially since screen sizes are getting bigger. Even before the end of fulling getting to the end spot the home screen will be ready and so will your thumb. Since the end of the half-circle is where most people have their fingers placed. I may post a video unlocking with it if people don't get the concept.

Purely Self Promotion

Ingenious title I think. Well, as it turns out the Universal Template is taking way to long. Damn me that I am being so perticular when designing it. Sorry to get all marketer on you, but it was designed with very high attention to detail. Which is bad for me, taking so long. I suspect it will be purchasable by the end of this month. In the mean time, since I know you guy, again singular dictations on this blog, are in absolute agony waiting for the template. Since we are on the subject of the template, here is another peek.

I will upload a preview of the business template later today. Also if you can guess what this page this preview is showing, I will give you 100 brownie points.

I Am Creating More Stuff That I Am Going To Influence You To Buy

Dear reader, singularly of course.

People of the ages past... never mind. I was just going to make statements on how this product is revolutionary. I guess I am still in the present way of marketing ideas. Basically I am making a template, you should follow me, and buy it when it comes out. That just saved you a lot of time reading a influential marketing scheme to make me money.

Designers and Coders; Two different Careers

When are companies going to realize the best designers are not coders and the best coders are not designers?
Image
The company I do interaction design for thinks how it should be. They do not require designers to be coders too. Your either The Best at one thing or ok at everything. For my career path, I choose to be the best at what I do, design by the way. I do just want to clear up that I do know a bit of code; to the ability to create a iPhone application. Just that it would not be as good if it was created by a dedicated developer. Think about it like this, a construction company has 46 workers and have 15 sites they are constructing. That leaves near 3 workers per site. The buildings will take much slower to build now since they are spread out to many jobs.
Your brain can only build skills by applying them over time, 10+ thousand hours to be exactish. Mozart started at the age of 11 years old creating music, but he didn’t create anything like he was know for until 23 years old, that by the way is about 87,000 hours. You averagely master a skill after about 10,000 hours of practice. You may master a skill after 10,000 hours, but… your still may not be the best. That takes years and years and year, 8 years to be exactish and passion; a drive.
You maybe thinking, “well then, couldn’t you just spend a few years on one skill, then another few years on another skill. Your problem will then be soved, you can focus on one skill at a time”. In more or less words. Let’s go back to the construction example. You have built the a building will all 46 workers, it is now the best building ever. The workers now move all their focus to the new building they are constructing. After awhile the best building ever was made again, but you… I mean the workers lost something. While the workers focused on the new building, what happened to the last one. It now was out done by another construction company who focused completely. I am sure in many ways their are exemptions, but in most cases people can only be the best at one skill. Even if you have half the workers tending to the last one, the same problem exists.
If you hire for a company or do anything of the sorts, dont hire someone because they have many skills, hire the person who focuses on one. Quality vs quantity should be kept in mind always.
I have seemed to have lost the meaning of the article’s title. But the idea behind this does follow in many situations, not just designers and coders.

Apologies, New Blog, News

Apologies
I am very sorry that I have not been posting for awhile, many complex reasons.

New Blog
Crikey another, yes. This blog is for my little upcoming application design studio called Cryark, pardon the non existent pun. For some time I have been doing all of this just for something to do, but now I want to do it full time and become serious with my work and turn it into a profession. I have been a website designer for six years and for all of those years my favorite thing to do was building, changing, and tinkering with the layout for maximum usability. Looking at research of the human interaction and testing different designs was always something of interest. Now I want to turn that into something that will have an outcome; product of some sort. The Cryark blog is where concepts, work, and other related UX article will be posted. Please head over to the blog cryark.blogspot.com.

News
The website for Cryark is up, please visit that too cryark.com.

Printer Color Test

I needed something to test CYMK on my printer for a project so I simply made a color test page. I have the file below if you want to use it.
